Chapter 7: It Carries Few, It Drowns Many

Paige Duplass comes from Nesh, the capital of The Linger Straits. As the events of Season 1 begin, she is 31 years old and works as a marketeer at Old Black Crow (OBC), presumably having done so for a number of years, and has been inundated in corporate culture.

Personality

Paige, when introduced, is polite and non-confrontational, even when she's aware that she's being manipulated or in danger. She has a strong moral compass, but struggles to find a way to pursue a righteous path in a world where cruelty is exercised so casually which pushes her to fight back, developing a stronger, albeit less stable, force of character.

Despite struggling with facing her reality, Paige utilises eloquent speech and leadership, thanks to her marketing experience. Her growth as a person, and certain drastic decisions she makes, is a major plot device throughout the show.

Background

Paige is the eldest daughter of Dennis Duplass, a conman and farmer, and she was dragged into his numerous schemes growing up. We know her father had multiple marriages, and in her descriptions of both her parents, they tend to be arguing. She has multiple siblings. Her mother, Gwenyth, died while Paige was young. Her father wouldn't take her to visit her mother's grave. She would leave white crocus flowers at the intersection Gwenyth died at in order to commemorate her because they were her mother's favourite flowers.

Chapter 7: It Carries Few, It Drowns Many	Paige talks about her father, her job at Old Black Crow (OBC) Incorporated, Vaughan's death and her decision to go on a road trip to the the Peninsula. There, she is kidnapped by Carpenter and Faulkner.
Chapter 8: And Those I Love, It Rends	Paige listens to her kidnappers bicker and spends the entire time at 113 Longray Mansion considering an escape route. She ultimately escapes Roake's angel with Carpenter and Faulkner.
Chapter 10: It Grips My Tongue, My Throat	Carpenter leaves Paige to watch over a very injured Faulkner. She and Carpenter narrowly escape an abandoned call centre that has become the haunt of Babble.
Chapter 11: My Voice Cries Truths I Never Knew	Carpenter takes Paige to Fisherman's Rest Incorporated Waste Disposal in order to find a pox monk to heal Faulkner. She is saved by Carpenter from the dump's servants, who use her father and childhood to lure her in.
Chapter 12: And To Fight Is Just To Choke	Carpenter, Faulkner and Paige share a meal at Chitterling's Chapel. When she splits up from Carpenter and Faulkner, she calls her father.
Chapter 13: So Let Me Dwell Eternal	At the border between the Peninsula and the Linger Straits, Paige knocks on the window of a sleeping security guard who has become a victim of Sid Wright.
Chapter 14: And In Ruined Flesh Ascend	Paige impersonates a police officer and rescues Carpenter from Hayward.
Chapter 15: For My Song Has No Beginning...	Paige drives Carpenter to Marcel's Crossing. There she is told to leave in case things go south. Police officers pull up and she initially attempts to continue impersonating an officer, until Hayward turns up. Following the flood, she is arrested.
Chapter 18: If My Hands Could Shape The Flow	Paige has been returned to her home in the Linger Straits after a long legal battle. She has caused tensions between the two nations to grow. She goes to the grocery store, where Hayward works.
Chapter 20: And Rend Us Both To Dust Below	Paige goes to visit an old coworker, Hembry, to ask for his assistance. She wants to create a new god. There she meets Hayward again.
Chapter 23: I'd Howl, I'd Scream, In Victory	It seems Paige has learnt many things from Carpenter and Faulkner, including hostage taking. She argues with her father. Through the combined efforts of Paige, Dennis and Hayward they create a new god.
Chapter 26: My Song, My Sorrow and I	Paige and Hayward name their god the Many Below and create its first book. She and her father attempt to spread their faith in the Neshite prisons.
Chapter 27: So I'll Bear It Trembling Onwards	Paige's god is more successful and destructive than she could have imagined. She speaks to Hayward about it. When her father dies, her god overtakes her. She becomes a prophet for the god she has created.
Chapter 29: And Where My Final Footsteps Fall	Paige and Hayward wash ashore in the Peninsula following their escape. She has returned to herself, but remembers everything she went through.
Chapter 32: Its Wrath Shall Scald The Sun	Paige has become the Widow of Wounds. She's trying to cope with the role that's been forced upon her, as the leader of a movement that has become far larger than anything she could have anticipated. She expresses her unhappiness to both Hayward and Carpenter.
Chapter 34: Some Day There Shall Be None	Paige is drunk. She sobers up quickly in a crisis and proves her worth as a leader. She comes into conflict with Elgin, who doubts her leadership and is losing faith in her. She and Carpenter discuss their similar problems. She watches Hayward and Carpenter leave for Glottage and pleads with her god to protect them.
Chapter 37: And Even The Kings In Their Bowers Of Steel	Paige wakes up outside of Bellwethers, lead there by her god in her sleep. She speaks to Elgin and they discuss matters at the Grace. She tells Elgin that she needs a copy of On The Birthing Of Gods.
Chapter 41: But As My Last Breath Splits My Throat	Paige tries to speak to Hayward over the radio. They cannot hear each other. Things are going well in the Grace, but she is changing. She's found On The Birthing Of Gods and it brings her comfort. She leaves the Grace to rescue Moss and his companions, and is involved in a car crash. She meets and talks with the Maiden before she is rescued by Elgin and Dan.
Chapter 44: Of Prophets' Dark Deceptions	Paige listens to Shrue's final broadcast with Elgin. She does not believe that what happened in Glottage is due to the Woundtree and is outraged that Dan and other members are celebrating it as a victory. She grieves for Hayward, assuming him to be dead. She calls for a final meeting in the Grace.
Chapter 45: Of Love, And Gods' Defeat (Part One)	Paige mourns for Hayward, crying quietly for him. She then addresses the Grace and tells her people her plan to leave and go into the Polluted Lands. After holding a vote, they decide to do so. Paige speaks to Elgin and they decide to leave a memorial for their fallen friends, including directions of how to find them.
Chapter 45: Of Love, And Gods' Defeat (Part Two)	Paige sits in the radio tower at the Grace and contemplates everything they are leaving behind. She is mourning, but decided. Elgin comes in to tell Paige that everything has been organised. They share a moment, before the set out. Whilst they are walking through the Polluted Lands, she hears Hayward's voice on the radio. She tells him that she will come back for him, but he urges her to keep going. He tells her the opposite of a sacrifice is a gift given with no conditions. He tells her that their time together was a gift. She tells him that he was a gift to her, and that she's not ready to say goodbye. After the radio cuts out, she continues walking with her people. She is at the back, knowing that she will be the first to be left behind. But for now, they walk on.

Connections

• Dennis Duplass is Paige's father. Of her siblings, she is the only one still in contact with her father. He uses their connection to ask her for money. She hates him but can't say no to him, as she craves his conditional affection. Paige expresses that she doesn't want to see him change for the better because that would mean having to forgive him for his actions during her childhood; presumably, his death angers and jars her for this reason.

• Gwyneth Duplass was Paige's mother who died while Paige was young.

• Vaughan is Paige's friend and colleague at Old Black Crow.

• Hembry is a colleague of Paige's at Old Black Crow. They were never particularly close.

• Carpenter is initially Paige's captor. However, the two grow closer over the course of Season 1 until Paige eventually rescues her from Hayward. When they meet again in Season 3 they bond over being similarly god haunted and wrung out.

• Faulkner is initially Paige's captor. They share a conversation about their lives. Their relationship is amicable.

• Hayward does not start off as a friend of Paige's. After rescuing Carpenter from the police, Paige is arrested at Marcel's Crossing. When she is released, Hayward follows her in Nesh until he is attacked at Hembry's. When he wakes up, he has been taken as a captive of Paige. She offers him the chance to join her and create a new god. He looks after her, and Paige tries to encourage her god to look after him. She views him as a gift.

• Elgin is a disciple of the Woundtree. She doesn't believe Elgin likes her. Once Hayward leaves for Glottage, Paige becomes more communicative with Elgin. Elgin pleads with her not to leave them like the other founding priests of new gods, telling her that the Children of the Woundtree need her.

• Dan is a disciple of the Woundtree. At first, he idolises and worships Paige as the Widow Of Wounds. However, it become clear that he genuinely believes in her as a person.

Trivia

• As implied by Dennis In Episode 23 and confirmed by an ask on The Silt Verses Tumblr, Paige is canonically transgender.

• Paige has an ex-girlfriend called Helena.

• Paige and Hayward's dynamic is that of "the paladin and the prophet". There is something a little romantic about their relationship, although it is not dwelled upon in the show.

• In her living room at the Grace, Paige write "Dennis Duplass helped."

• She will turn into a saint of the Many Below, someday.
